Danny: Can I help you with something?
Deeks: Just thinking about your hair. Is it bulletproof?
Danny: That’s good. I mean, you got, you got a haircut like my neighbor’s Schnauzer, and you’re talking to me about grooming.
Deeks: This— style by pillow.
Danny: Yeah. I don’t know what that means.
Deeks: It’s a lot less hair spray.
Danny: Ah. That’s good.
Deeks: Just warming you up for the A game.
Danny: The A game? All right. Yeah. Well, I’ll be careful; I don’t want you to hurt yourself.NCIS Los Angeles & Hawaii Five-0, 3.21 - Touch of Death

I loved this scene. Loved it. And excuse me now while I ramble a bit, because I want to get down exactly why I love these two and why everyone should start watching NCIS: LA not only because it’s a good show but because these two characters are fantastic. Seriously, you guys, go watch this show. Go. Go now.
Kensi’s never going to be someone who asks for help openly. She’s never going to be someone who can sit down and talk about her feelings all day. She bottles them up, deals with them on her own, because that’s what she always had to do and switching that up now isn’t going to happen. That’s why Deeks will always be so good for her, because he’s a pain in her ass, but he gets it. He gets that she’s suffering and she’s planning on suffering alone because that’s just how she is. He gets getting her to open up a little is going to take effort on his part or she’s going to go this alone and he isn’t going to allow that. Because they’re partners, and if he can shoulder even a little bit of her pain for her he’s going to do it. That doesn’t mean her shutting him down without a second thought is easy for him to deal with, especially after all they’ve been through this season together. You can see it in his face - more the first time he tries than this one, but in this one as well. Because it should get easier for her to trust him at this point, right? He was the only one who saw her at what was probably her lowest point and didn’t flinch away even for a second.
I like to think that looking of realization she ends up having after she snaps at him has a lot to do with that. That she knows she’s taking her anger and despair out on the last person who deserves to get yelled at. He’s being an idiot, but it’s only because he’s trying so hard to even just get a smile out of her or to at least focus her mind on something that isn’t what happened for even a few seconds. So she extends the olive branch - the brief lean against his shoulder and the thank you - to show him that she does get what he’s trying to do. That she does appreciate it, even if he drives her insane sometimes. That in the end, just him being there helps her, and she hopes he gets that.
As an aside, but still on topic, I sometimes wish Deeks heard her talking to Hetty a few episodes ago, when she thought he’d been fired and basically blew her off in an attempt to keep the cover going without her suspecting something. Because the fact she admits that what she had been feeling was only comparable to the circumstances surrounding her father has always been telling to me just how much he means to her - and this is before her two part story arc, even - is extremely telling, moreso than even her admittance to him in her arc storyline was. This girl has been through so much heartbreak in her life, and the events of that episode, of her losing him as a partner and being made to feel like he didn’t actually give a shit about her with how he brushed her off, literally ranked only below her father’s mysterious death.
